Program Focus

This course will teach you how to create web pages the old-fashioned way -- by hand and upload them to the internet. There are many software "tools" that allow you spin web pages without touching any HTML. But if you are serious about doing more than a page or two, and want to push your creative envelope, a grounding in the basics will greatly accelerate what you can do. For instructors enrolled in this course, emphasis will focus on developing materials that may be used by students or in the classroom.

Prerequisites for this course:

Pre-Test (Optional)

  1. Find the file "commdlg.dll" on the computer you are using. What is the full path to this file?
  2. Name two common web browsers.
  3. What is Windows Notepad (two words).
  4. Copy the first paragraph on this page and paste it into the email you are going to send below.
  5. Email your answers to martin@msteinbeck.net. Inform the instructor when you have completed sending the email.

If you have difficulty with any of these tasks, you should consider enrolling in one or more of the following courses before attempting this class:

Course Description

This course covers the steps for writing HTML files, creating web pages, and uploading them to the internet.

Course Materials

  1. 3½" floppy disk and/or a USB flash drive (also known as a ThumbDrive). Both can be found inexpensively at Walmart or Staples. They are also available in the bookstore.
Floppy Disks  OR  USB Flash Drive

  2. Text Book - Gaskill, D. (2004). WEB DESIGN MADE EASY, 2nd ed., Morton Publishing Company, Englewood, CO

3. 1st Page 2000 Home Page

We will use an "enhanced" text editor program called 1st Page 2006 during this course. The student will install 1st Page 2006 during the first class period. 1st Page is free and requires no license. Even though this course will refer to the use of 1stPage, any text editor capable of creating plain text files will also be sufficient (e.g. NotePad, WordPad). Use the most basic text editor while you learn HTML and then later you can explore some of the many HTML "editors"; available. If you use a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Word Perfect then you must save your files as plain ASCII text format.

1st Page 2006 has an accompanying FTP program 1st Transfer. After installing 1st Page 2006, download the 1st Transfer program to the 1st Page 2006 directory which is usually C:\Program Files\Evrsoft First Page 2006\ if you installed using the defaults. The 1st Transfer program is then accessible from the tool bar after you start 1st Page 2006.

4. CoffeeCup Home Page

CoffeeCup Free FTP is a fast no frills FTP program that makes it easy to drag and drop files to and from your Website. It supports multiple server profiles, resumes broken uploads and downloads, and can transfer files in binary, ASCII, or auto-mode. Free FTP works with any server and is so easy to setup. Just enter your username and password and click "Connect". Free FTP remembers your server info so connecting to your site again is a snap.

5.

WinZip Home Page

Zip files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster. WinZip makes it easy for Windows users to work with archives. WinZip features an intuitive point-and-click drag-and-drop interface for viewing, running, extracting, adding, deleting, and testing files in archives with a standard Windows interface. WinZip provides the same "friendly face" for all archive formats.

6.

IrfanView Home Page

IrfanView is a fast and simple image viewer and editor that supports all major graphic formats, including BMP, DIB, JPEG, GIF, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, multipage TIFF, and TGA. In addition, it features drag-and-drop support, directory viewing, TWAIN support, slide shows, batch conversion, and modifications, such as color depth, crop, blur, and sharpen.

While IrfanView, "out of the box", supports many features, there may be times where you need to install various plugins to make IrfanView more powerful. IrfanView PlugIns package offers additional file formats and effects for IrfanView.

7.

Ipswitch Home Page

File Transfer Client for Windows 95, 98, and NT. WS_FTP Limited Edition is free to certain academic, U.S. government and non-business home users.

7.
